It could be possible that “Liquid Retina” only means “a Retina display with rounded corners” and no other tech spec because that is consistent with how every display is described. I can’t dismiss that all of Apple’s displays with rounded edges (except the iPhone) are called Liquid Retina displays but I’m not sure if that’s just because Apple’s newest designs have rounder displays. It might be something about rounded corners. It's not something about glass lamination to the display because the iPad Air 2 has "just" a Retina display, but it's bonded to the glass.
Retina display pro#
It's not a brightness standard because both the M2 pro and Air are 500 nits. But the iPad Pro 11", iPad Air 5 and iPad mini have "Liquid Retina displays" despite not having notches. That was my original guess because this marketing term appeared with the iPhone XR, the first Apple LCD display with a notch. It's not the ability to put a notch in an LCD display. The MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air M2 have the same pixel density or the MacBook Air is ever so slightly lower (I don't think it can be deduced until someone measures the actual displays). On the compare Macs page the MacBook Air is listed with a "Liquid Retina display" while the MacBook Pro M2 has "just" a Retina display. Either I'm not catching something, or there’s an intransitive logic error in Apple's marketing. I really can't figure this out of the life of me.
